The Host

  • May. 15th, 2008 at 10:01 PM
title: The Host
author: Stephanie Meyer
grade: A+

I wasn't sure about this book at first, I have her other books (the Twilight series), but this one sounded more of a science fiction novel at first sight.  It was worth it though. It's long (619 pages), but it's the perfect melding of sci-fi with a hint of fantasy.  The main character is Wanderer, a soul who lives inside a 'host' human body, named Melanie.  It's common place for humans to relinquish their bodies to the new souls, but Melanie refuses because she longs to see Jaime, her little brother, and Jared, her boyfriend, again. It's interesting to read about how Melanie and Wanderer get along with each other while sharing the same body.  Overall, it was a fantastic read!

Upcoming Political Fiction

  • May. 15th, 2008 at 10:35 PM
It is the season to talk politics but author Alex Hutchinson is doing it a little differently. His upcoming book Purple State is a fictional though inspired story about a group of activists who who are investigating the botched 2000 Presidential election in Florida. This tale of murder, mercenaries and manipulation shares a level of reality similar to when Joe Klein's brilliant novel Primary Colors made such a stir. The reason being that the author lived and worked in Florida for the six years following the election debacle. Trained as a political activist by the Florida democratic party, Alex heard hundreds of tales of what was going on beneath the media highlights. When Purple State is released on September 1st voters will be shocked at how dangerous it had become to live in the sunshine swing state during the war on terror.

Maddie is in love with Clive, who doesnt mind spending time with her and even occasionally making out, but hes in love with someone else. He is witty and charming and DEEP. He is also a pothead. This is definitive chick-lit, a comfortable read that explores sexuality, drugs, depression, and learning about oneself.

Quote:

SnowAngel: it's true. true blue, me and u, and don't forget to add maddie 2.

SnowAngel: do u like my rhyme?

zoegirl: very impressive

SnowAngel: wait, there's more! er, let's c... since 7th grade they did not part, they stayed connected in their hearts. zoe's the good girl, maddie's wild, and sweet darling angela is meek and mild.

zoegirl: meek? hahahahaha! mild? hahahahaha!

~~UNQUOTE.

Btw, that was EXACTLY the way Lauren wrote the book, that wasn't the way I typed. Cool, right?

My thoughts: I thought this book was fantastic. This is the second book to the series and I am on the third one now.  Once again, Lauren pulled it off.  Great job! *encore, encore.*

Murphy, C.E.: Urban Shaman

  • May. 15th, 2008 at 7:15 PM
Urban Shaman
Writer: C.E. Murphy
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Pages: 344

The premise: after witnessing a woman in danger, protagonist Joanne Walker sets out to find this woman and make things right. Naturally, Jo finds herself entangled in a world she didn't know existed, where gods and godlings roam the Earth, banshees exist, and people are shamans.

The kicker is, she's just learned she's one of them.

With such a cool premise, I wish I liked the book more. But the plot didn't have a solid sense of direction, the villains' motivations were questionable, and to be honest, I didn't much care for the protag at the start of the book. There's a difference between ass-kicking and annoying, and unfortunately, Joanne's voice read to me as annoying. But that's me. What makes urban fantasy work for me is voice, and the voice just didn't appeal to me personally, but it might appeal to someone else. I don't mind having read this book, but I'm not interested in the rest of the books in the trilogy, even though I wouldn't mind reading some of Murphy's later, unrelated work.

The full review is in my journal if anyone's interested. As always, comments and discussion are most welcome.

REVIEW: C.E. Murphy's URBAN SHAMAN

Happy Reading! :)

bandombigbang

  • May. 16th, 2008 at 6:37 AM
As I added in an edit in my last post, re: [info]bandombigbang and fics that weren't in by the May 10th deadline, there's finally been an answer posted to the community here:

We've been getting quite a few questions about the inclusion of late fics (i.e. stories that didn't have a rough draft sent in for the deadline) in the challenge. We talked about it - at length. Ahem. Our apologies for the delayed response - and decided, you know, the more the merrier!

Obviously, late fics won't receive art or fanmixes; however, if you send us your completed and beta'd story by June 1st, it will still officially be a part of our Very First Bandom Big Bang! (Now, THAT'S something you want to get framed and show the grandkids.)

So... a new deadline to aim for.

And yes, I am up at 6.30am, I've actually been awake since 5.11am. I'm contemplating using this to my advantage and starting work at 8am so I can finish an hour earlier. And by "contemplating" I mean I will, because filling in another hour not being able to sleep? Ugh.

Also, I can't access LJ at work anymore. :(

Twilight Series: Books vs. Movies

  • May. 15th, 2008 at 8:38 AM
How well do you think the movies will follow the books?

So. I'm home and I'm alive. Sleepy, but alive. My first day back at work proved what an absolute dog's breakfast the new paperless system is, but the new building is not so bad.

Also I think my cat actually missed me. At least, I think that's what him going "MY FAAAAAACE, LET ME SHOW YOU IT" at 4am means.

Since I never heard back from the organisers regarding the email I sent last week(ish) about [info]bandombigbang, I must assume that I will not be allowed to post my fic when that time comes around. Despite being out of the country for a month and the 10000-odd words (and probably more, come to think of it) I still managed to write... which is disappointing, because I busted my ass to write while on holiday but what can you do, right?

Edit: Finally, an answer.

I LOVED this 'poem' in primary school!

Dear Ladies and Jellyspoons

I come before you
to stand behind you
And tell you something
I know nothing about

Next Thursday,
which is Good Friday,
there will be a Mothers meeting,
for Fathers only.

Wear your best clothes
if you haven't any,
and if you can come,
please stay at home.

Admission's free
pay at the door.
Take a seat
and sit on the floor.

It makes no difference
where you sit
The man in the gallery's
sure to spit.

Strange.

  • May. 15th, 2008 at 12:12 PM
I have an almost undeniable urge to buy myself some Rolling Stones. Stranger still is that I'm feeling a similar urge for Dire Straits.

I have no idea what that has to do with what I'm currently listening to.

Death on Demand series

  • May. 14th, 2008 at 4:04 PM

Every once in a while I feel an urge to do a little write-up celebration of a favorite book, series or author, and right now I feel compelled to pay homage to ‘cozy’ mystery author Carolyn G. Hart and in particular, her ‘Death on Demand’ series. It’s one of my very favorites and I love to go back and re-read them over and over again.

For those who don’t know what a ‘cozy’ is, the term defines a sub-category of the mystery genre and refers to mysteries in which the sleuth is not a professional – i.e., not a police / homicide detective, investigator, etc. Mystery queen Agatha Christie made the ‘cozy’ mystery most popular with her Miss Marple series.
There are currently 18 books in the DoD series,
